✦ Development Background

Since 2010, the International Marine Organization (IMO) has signed a number of agreements on ship's carbon emissions. In 2020, the IMO reached a new agreement on ship's carbon emission, in which EEXI has become a target-oriented technical measure, i.e. setting a standard for ship's energy efficiency, and the ship will not be able to operate normally if don't meet this standard. The standard is expected to become mandatory in 2023. Therefore, before 2023, the ship that doesn't meet the energy efficiency requirement will need to be retrofitted to improve its energy efficiency index. At the same time, wind power ships not only meet the needs of ship operation, but also actively responds to China policy of "achieving Carbon Peak & Carbon Neutrality".

✦ Advantages of Wind Propulsion

Wind propulsion systems seen on modern merchant ships fall into three main categories: rotor sails, rigid wing sails, and modern soft sails. In any case, the prospect of wind-assisted propulsion devices is relatively bright, and still relatively competitive compared to other ship's emission reduction technologies. In summary, the main advantages of wind propulsion include:

→ A technically and commercially feasible/viable solution that can already save 5% to 30% of fuel consumption in the shipping market.

→ Cost-effective and not depend on changes in port infrastructure.

→ Increased operational autonomy in reducing the commercial risks and uncertainties reliance on other alternative fuels.

→ Help the global fleet reduce net emissions in the short term, reduce the carbon intensity of the entire fleet, and better achieve the emission reduction goals of IMO greenhouse gas (GHG).

→ There has been a substantial increase in wind energy technology solutions

→ Most wind power systems are fully automated and integrated into the ship's energy management system

→ Can be used not only as a auxiliary wind propulsion power device for ships, but also as a main propulsion device on new-build ships equipped with auxiliary engines.

✦ Flettner Sail System Estimator

If install Dealfeng rotor sails, our partner LR can provide fuel saving calculations for the installation of rotor sails. The Flettner rotor savings calculator is an interactive tool to determine the potential impact on the net propulsion fuel consumption when operating a Flettner Rotor System. It provides an estimate of the propulsion fuel savings potential for many types of merchant ships when using a FRS, and for any trading route in the world. Besides, the tool has the flexibility to explore many types of ship partculars, FRS arranagments, sailing routes, operating profiles and seasonal variations.
